HunterGirl called out a “red flag” in the cheating anthem she released on Friday (March 6).

The Tennessee-born singer-songwriter, 27, teamed up with Brock Berryhill, Jessie Jo Dillon, Jesse Frasure, Jaxson Free and Taylor Phillips to write “Come and Get Your Boy.” Trent Willmon produced the track, described as “a knowing nod across the room between two women who’ve seen this story before,” states a press release announcing the single’s debut. HunterGirl’s newest single “unfolds with the kind of sly confidence that only comes from hard-won experience.”

The 2022 American Idol runner-up will perform the new song live at the legendary Grand Ole Opry on Friday evening; however, the song’s inspiration stems from HunterGirl’s performances on other stages in Nashville, Tennessee. She explained that she’s witnessed the story while performing at downtown honky tonks along Nashville’s historic Lower Broadway.

“I performed for years on Broadway in downtown Nashville and I have seen firsthand this story behind ‘Come and Get Your Boy’ play out in real life,” HunterGirl, whose real name is Hunter Wolkonowski, said in a statement. “This was such a fun song to write. As women, we all need to look out for one another, and most of the women I know have some fierce private detective skills. We have all witnessed that guy with the red flag waving.”

“He’s a low life, mess around kind/ He’s a red flag wavin’/ Come and get your boy/ If you could see him, you would leave him/ I can tell you neither one of us need him/ ‘Cause he ain’t nothin’ but a lie, lie, lie/ In here tonight outta line, line, line/ I’ve been there, been you before/ Let me tell you girl, he ain’t no man/ Come and get your boy”

“Come and Get Your Boy” is HunterGirl’s latest release since “Somewhere Wild,” a single she wrote with Jeff Garrison and Bob DiPiero. The 2024 CMT Next Women of Country artist previously shared that the song “was a journey of finding myself again and reigniting that spark of endless possibility. It is a reminder that it is never too late to grow, and that sometimes being lost is what leads you home.”

Before that, HunterGirl released “Dirt,” which she described as “my childhood in three minutes.” She told iHeartCountry around the time she released “Dirt” that the song helped her feel “re-centered.” She said, “I hope people feel that, too. With the music coming after this, I feel like I’ve finally stepped into my most authentic self. I put my boots on and stand ten toes down in who I am.”
