Guards at Northern California Jail Seize Illegal Jailhouse Liquor

Guards at a jail in Northern California jail say they dashed any hopes of prisoners enjoying a boozy Super Bowl party after they confiscated ingredients used to make homemade booze.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office on Saturday posted a photo of two dozen officers standing behind more than a dozen large plastic bags filled with what the sheriff's office described as "illegally made jail house alcohol from fruit and juice." At least one bag appears to be filled with oranges.

“There will be no super bowl party at Santa Rita Jail tomorrow. Good work by our team on duty today,” the sheriff’s office post said.

The ingredients were confiscated on Saturday, the day before the San Francisco 49ers were scheduled to take on the Kansas City Chiefs.

Jailhouse booze, or 'Pruno' is an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting various fruits like apples, oranges, fruit cocktail, fruit juices, and other ingredients in combination with crumbled bread. The bread acts as a yeast for the booze to ferment. The concoction is often made using a large plastic bag, hot running water, and a sock to help filter the pulp during fermentation. Depending on the time spent fermenting, sugar content, and other factors, the booze's alcohol content can run as high as 14%, comparable to what you'd find in a strong wine.

The taste is charitably described by Wikipedia as a 'bile flavored wine-cooler."
